Now that I'm working at a Samurai Comics I'm able to read new comics as they come out. I thought it would be a good idea to post about the new stuff that I liked.

Here is a list of books that came out on 10/03/07 that i would like to read. I will post a review if i get a chance to read them.

Beowulf #1: I think It's a tie in with the movie, witch I'm looking foreword to. So hopefully it's not like all the other movie tie ins crappy.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer #7: This is the second issue in the story arc by Brian K. Vaughan. From what I here fans are liking it as much as the Joss Whedon story arc witch started the series out.

Jack Of Fables #14: Spin off of Fables I need not say any more.

Iron And The Maiden #3: I have read the first two in the sires and have liked them. the story moves along, and the art work by Francis Manapul is well done.

I will try and read these on my days off and post some reviews on Tuesday when I get back in to the shop.

My goal is to get set up and read things on Wednesday night and get these up some time Thursday. I think I will go to the publishers sites and see whats coming out on Tuesday's and tell you what i think about them like i did to day. but as this is the first time doing it its all out of wack.

Later
-Kenny

Not A Last Minute Post

24 hour comic day.

Levi and I will be at Samurai Comics. Levi, Sean, Rich, Isaac, and I will be there. No new book’s but we will have some of the original art for the next wave of ChopShop book’s to show it of. The plan is for us to be there from 10-11:30 am. Yea I know we are not going to be there very long. We just threw this together at the last minute.

Ok here is a run down of what’s going on around ChopShop. Rich is working on a short story for Random #4. Levi is leathering Maze. Sean & Belyn are working on Crook #1 one, witch is in the final stages. We have a new guy James working on a script that I wrote for random #4. So postproduction on random #4 is just right around the corner. Right now it looks like we will be done around the same time as the Phx. Con so the plan is to release it there. I will try and get some scans of the art work so you guys can check it out.

FREEDOM!!!

Ok, trying this yet one more time. But this time I’m going to try some thing different. What I plan to do is write about what’s going on with me as pertains to art. Not trying to say things about ChopShop in general. ChopShop is a big part of me, so I will be letting you in on al that’s up with the crew. But also I will be putting up some sample chapters of my novel and any thing else art wise that I do. But don’t worry I will not be posting about my love life or some chick I don’t have the courage to ask on a date, none of that crap. But I mite put some things about my job situation though.

On that note I think I will give a small up date. I have recently been laid off at the job that was paying my bills for the last six years. So as part of this rearranging of my life I think I will try and do more art stuff and not waste six more years of my life for nothing. I do have a plan for the next month or two. I have been talking with Mike & Moryha over at Samurai Comics; I might end up working there. In my opinion that would be the best thing for me, it will give me a chance to be more creative or be around people who support that kind of stuff. The one thing that has been killing me over the past five or so years is working all day and hating the place, so what would happen is I would go home just mentally drained and not want to do any work. Now I’m hopping that I will be inspired by all the work around me.

Ok on the novel thing, I have 80% of it written in a note book. I know how to end it and exactly how it will end. So what I need to do now is take what I have on paper and transfer it to my computer. As I’m typing the thing up I will fix any story issues that I see, in effect it will be a rewrite. After that is done I’m planning on sitting down with Levi for a story edit. We will go over the book and try to ketch all the inconstancy’s and get them fixed. After that I will let Dawn fix all my grammar mistakes. Then I will print the dam thing. So if all goes well should be done about six or so months.

Well I that’s all I can think of for now, I will try and update as often as possible.

Later
-Gray

Rising from the dead

As I said over on the main site we are mulling around once more.
First things first, WE ARE WORKING ON MORE COMICS! Here is what’s on the slate as of right now. (This could change, none these books are in a finished state. Just letting you guys know what’s on the way.)

As I have said Sean’s new book is looking cool as hell, Krook is the best book he has put together. It’s in the inking stage last I heard, plus Sean will be painting the cover, I have seen the pencils and can not wait tell he gets this book done. There is some thing in the way he has worked on this book, Sean has completely change his method on making comics. This book will be a hit!

Levi is also working on a solo project. Maze is a story Levi has been working on for about 4-5 years now. It’s been threw several rewrites, creative teams, and concepts, now after all that time the first book in many is now done being penciled. There is nothing more I can say about this book, it’s Levi’s opus.

We also are working on reviving the very successful contest for random, if you would like to see the winner from the first one check out random #3 out now! The rules won’t be much different; we will post a script on the site, and in comic’s shops in phoenix. You take the script draw the comic and send it to us. We pick the one we like the best based on a set of judging criteria. Then the winner will get there work published in random #4. As soon as the details are set I will let you know them here and on the site.

That’s all for now Folk’s
-Gray

Not so much this time

As you can see I did a little updating to the template. Just doing some cosmetic stuff this week changed the color scheme some what. I think I will tweak some more later.

As for comic news, Sean is sailing a long with his new book Krook, last I saw Levi has got a decent amount done on Maze, as for random 4 I think we are starting the preproduction on it. What that means is, we are talking with each other and seeing who wants to work on a story, and then we come up with an idea and work it out. Then we shift in to production witch going threw the process of making the comic. Neither of these two steps has a time line at this point and time. As our ruff ideas become a little more solid is when we work out a time line.

One other bit of news, Isaac has a gallery of his work on deviantArt.com. But you will have to create an account to see most of it, because it is all adult stuff.

One More Time Chuck

As you can see we here at the ChopShop are starting to update stuff once again. We as always are going to try and keep you as informed as possible. But as of this moment, ChopShop is locking its self in a deep dark hole and going to crank out some work. We here at ChopShop think that the next step in our evolution is to put out some serous work.

The goal, as of 1/29/07 is to work on stuff and not show ourselves tell the 2008 cactus con. We have some cool things planed and it will take the whole year for us to get them done. I will try and post here when I get a chance and let you guys know what I can as soon as possible. But as nothing is in any state of completion I can’t revel any of it. What I can say, is that we are planning some more comics, most likely A new random, a new standalone book by Levi (Kind of like Midnight Pulp, Written and illustrated by the same person). Some art by the new guy James with a new story written by me. Sean has a new book in the works the working title is Krook. (Could change though).

There is some bad news to report about GearBot #3. Some douchebox broke in to Sean’s Car and took all of the original art work for the book. We had not started any of the post production on the book yet, so the only copy of the book is in the hands of the aforementioned douchebox. So if you are that guy we just what the art back.

Well that’s about it for now. But every Monday I will try and put some thing up here for you.

2nd Stop

1st Stop: Drawn to Comics

We have finally kicked off our local comic tour! We had a great showing at Drawn to Comics in old towne Glendale, and we nearly sold out of Simple #1. Ken, the owner was awesome, and very welcoming. Thank you man, you rock, and your store is a welcoming site in the downtowne Glendale area. All around we had a good time. The Raffle went well, we gave away Boom art prints, the framed one and a regular print. The winners of todays raffle are still eligible to win items at the other stops as we'll be drawing winners at every location. The final Drawing will feature the long board with original art and the Dragons Art Print.

And always, a thank you goes out to all our fans, new and old.

Next is Samurai "West" See the site for more information on that. The Gear Bot Print will be raffled off there and we expect to have a great time.

RAFFLE ITEMS!!

We got some bad ass Raffle Items to show off... I'll keep posting as the tour draws near, through the tour and as we're done how it's turned out overall.

So we have our plan: Do a Tour of comic shops through the metro Phoenix area, one each weekend for a month.

From here we needed to decide the dates and stores we wanted to hit. Drawn to Comics, has just opened in downtown Glendale, a familiar area for most of us at Chop Shop, so we figured we'd stop there first, asked the owner, Ken and it was all set. Next we wanted to show our appreciation for Samurai and everything they've done for us and asked Mike if we do asigning at his new store on 107th and Indian School. After that we figured we need to get to the East side and hit up Drew, the Owner of Ash Ave Comics in Tempe for our third leg of the tour. And finally, we wanted to end the tour at the shop where we did our first ever signing; Samurai Comics on 7th street. And to again show Mike our appreciation.

So we set up the tour, next is marketing and deciding what the big deal is to do a Tour in the first place... Next time.

A pic of us at Samurai

Ready and Waiting...

Fist Signing @ Samurai "West"

So we did our first signing at the new Samurai Comics on 107th and Indian School. Two huge things will be done in the next couple of months. And as soon as we have a date locked down it will be posted here first.

1. ChoppaCast: Some of the ChopShop team will speak their option. We will be talking about comics, events we will be attending, and anything else that springs up in our tainted minds.

2. BusStop Blues is a comic strip for the site. The newest member of the ChopShop team Justin provides the art. This is for all you out there that ride the bus. Right now we have some hardware issues that I’m trying to work out. Once I get that problem fixed, we will be good to go. Plus right now Justin is cranking out some strips. So we have a few built up for the launch.

3. Comics Section: Yep a rebuild of the comics section. Just us here at ChopShop trying to make our site better for you the fan. It will have full copies of most of the ChopShop library. Most notably will be full color versions of GearBot #1 and soon after #2. Plus stories from both issues of Random and one from the upcoming Random # 3.

4. The contest!
We are thinking about extending the deadline. It’s not official as of this moment. So still try and get your art in by the deadline. We are discussing it with all of ChopShop. The entrees that make it in by the Oct. 10 deadline do get special consideration.

Merchandise

1. Ok the long awaited ChopShop T-shirt. Yes we have some in the works. In the first wave there will not be a shirt with just our logo on it. We are working on getting one out there for you. You can’t imagine how hard it is to get a high quality shirt at a reasonable price. We don’t want to give you a piece of shit T-shirt but it shouldn’t cost an arm & leg either.

2. More comics: Yes as always ChopShop is working on more comics.
Random #3
And the book we started on 24Hr. comic day.

I think that’s enough to tide you over for a couple of days.

-Gray

The Contest

Check out our contest. Davin Yant. Everyone in Chop Shop was in attendance, I was the best man, and Kenny was the Groomsman. Sean and Isaac were the photographers. The reception was held at my house where the Lovely Dawn, who was a bridesmaid hosted a terrific party. It was really a fantastic affair. Much fun had by all. Especially Steve who succeeded in getting more trashed than anyone.

Also Davin and I are moving to Flagstaff, Chop Shop HQ will remain in Phoenix, while we expand operations to Northern Arizona. We expect that after some settling in, this will actually increase the productivity and more importantly, creativity of the Davin and myself. And we're not to far awawy to up with and supoort Phoenix's local indy comics events.

So anyway, there you go. It was interesting to hear Todd & Larry’s thoughts on what graphic novel are and where they are going. They pointed out some good book's like Blankets, Torso, Watchmen, and Sincity. It was also good to hear that Todd will be writing and directing the new Sawn movie. He said writing/ production would start some time next year. Hearing Todd call himself a geek was neat and that all the money he has did not go to his head. The relationship between sports fans and guys who go to midnight showings of Starwars was a cool peace logic put out by Todd also.

It’s late and I got to crash.
Late.

The end of Star Wars

Well where to begin.

The meat of the thing is I loved the movie. It took me two viewings before the jury came in, but I did love it. But no love is perfect.

Rather than type out a big wordy review, I will lost pro's and con's, elaborating where needed:

List of things that I didnt mind that everyone else did (Yes there will be spoilers)
-the Frankenstein walk and the "noooooo!". Didnt mind them at all. I mean what else is a brutha gonna do but scream.
-The space battle. Just more to take in next time.
-Grevious. Everyone was like "who is this guy?". Well I liked him, and i appreciated him even more after watching the cartoons.
-I am sure there is more. I forget right now.

Cringe-worthy dialouge:
"Hold me like you did by the lake on Naboo"
"Good relations with the wookies, I have"
"She's losing the will to live"

Wait... Back up... She is losing the will to live? What a shitty character. Seriously.
Here is the girl who was willing to give up EVERYTHING at the tender age of 14 to save her people. She risked life and limb to save Obi Wan. And suddenly NOW she is like "I dont believe you, anakin is okay, i looove him...*swoon*" Every woman I know who saw the movie was seriously dissapointed with Padme's exit-whimper. I am no mother, but what kind of chick who has SERIOUS GALAXY PERSPECTIVE loses the will to live and lets herself die, leaving her kids alone during Galactical turmoil? No really. But I digress.

And Anakin... Anakin Anakin Anakin.

Palpatine: Kill every Jedi ever.
Anakin: I can't, it's wrong. Well okay I will.

I hated this scene after seeing the midnight show. Then it really sunk in. "I will do anything, just save Padme." I get it now. I can deal.

Watching those movies is like reading Tolkien in one regard: You really have to read between the lines to appreciate what is ACTUALLY being said, rather than take the dialouge at face value. I mean the subtley it took Palpatine to play an ENTIRE GALAXY like he did. Just.Straight.Pimp. Really well done.

"We will have peace and order...Uhh...Even though I am the one who created the war out of thin air by seducing both sides to fight each other. Uhh, kill everyone."

I have a lot more thoughts on the movie, but nothing I want to take the time to type.

The first two movies reminded me of that one chick you dated who was cool as shit but after you started dating her you realized that she likes to steal your money and doesnt like sex nearly as much as she bragged about when you first met. ROtS is like sleeping with that girl's sister after the breakup and nutting in her shampoo. Sweet, Sweet Revenge.

Just thought you would like to know about this.

Don’t know how this one got by but I think it will do wonders for the fitness craze.
link

Revenge of the Lucas!

Belyn and I went to a 12:01 showing of revenge of the sith. Over all it’s the best out of the three newer films, Jedi is still the best star wars film ever made. I think if Lucas would have had some one else direct this one it would have been a whole lot better. After seeing this movie I’m still not convinced of having every set a grandiose 3D special effect. Every shot was way to chaotic, I think sky captain had the same problem. The wide shots look stunning but anything up close is just busy. Don’t get me wrong the 3d was spectacular in every shot as always. But they need to spend time to make them seam more realistic and not this amazing landscape with five billion things going on. It was distracting trying to look at all the work put in to the sets and to pay attention to some of the acting. From what I remember the confusing sets might have been they’re for that purpose alone. McGregor & Jackson did fantastic but every one else just did not have the hart. Maybe if Liam Neeson were in the film he could have jump-started the rest of the cast like in episode one. He was the best actor to ever dawn the Jedi robes. Well that’s the end of my rant on star wars. In other news the update will be done soon. If you don’t like what I said about star wars let me know. O and Tim I will say you half one the bet. So I owe you 10 bucks.

later

Down With Orange Tic Tacs!

On May 20th, starting at 3pm, Trunk Space Gallery and Samurai Comics' Brandon Huigens will be exhibiting a Sequential Art Gallery. There are some notable pieces by Will Eisner and R. Crumb last I heard, not to mention lots of local creators. Some of us from Chop Shop will attend. I donated the original art from the Maze Preview in Random #1, which all procceds will go to ACTOR. There will also be a 24 hour comic challenge. I think Chop Shop is going to sit that one out though. At least for me, one 24HCD a year is enough. There was this guy Denis I ended sitting next to. He had a kick ass comic from what I got to see. I did not end up getting his site. If I end up finding out it is. Last year we made it but I cant stand to let anyone see the results. This year was different. Everything went well, and we had a great time, but we didn't pull it off. But we're so excited about how the book is turning out that Davin, Ken and myself decided to not sacrifice the quality of the book for the sake of making the 24 hour mark. I'm really happy with how the pages turned out, and I'll get some of them put up on the site asap, as well as the storyboards. I don't know when we'll put it out in print or just put it on the site for now, well see how all of that goes.

Same with the the first Cheddar Daikini strips, still not done, the 24 hour comic thing held up progress on this one. But as soon as thats done we'll be kickstarting those off. And we'll see if I can maintain a schedule on that.

Next is Free Comic Day! See all of you at Samurai Comics on May 7th!

The Isotope Lounge

I just joined the Isotope virtual lounge messageboard and DAMN! Ok so it’s a Blog. But isn’t a post the same thing as a Blog? I think saying “I just posted” Is a lot better that saying “I just Bloged”. Enough about that if you like this think let us know over at the forum.

On to better subjects comics, I just picked up the new fables graphic novel over at samurai comics today. I missed some issues and the entire run is in the forth graphic novel. If you have not had a chance to check this book out you should. Its one of the best comics I have read, the first story arc tells you about how they all came to live in New York. Some one called the adversary takes over the fable lands and kills all who don’t escape to the mundane world. I think one of the best parts of the book is how they all had to adjust to living among “mundys”. (Used as a derogatory label towards any one who is not a fable.) They hint at a farm where all the fables that can pass as human are living like the three little pigs and Shere khan. Then in the second arc they take you there and flush out that part of the world really well. At the end of two arcs there is a rich and complex world to tell a lot of interesting stories. So far they are doing a superb job at takeing all the characters from the old fairy tales and putting them into interesting new stories. If you pick it up let me know what you think of it.

catus con

Here Is a pic of the crew at the Phx catusCon.

Cool

We now have a new venue to post updates, commentary and whatever we like for Chop Shop.
